Evelyn's Pals

This dead tree looks like a Halloween prop, and is the frequent home of vultures. I was about to leave the Venice Rookery when Evelyn, of the Venice Camera Club, stopped me and pointed to these vultures. Not beautiful, but hey, they are birds.

January 5. Nikon D70s, Nikkor 70-300mm at 300mm, ISO 400, f/5.6 for 1/350 sec.

As the birds were nearly black against a light sky, I used spot metering (which I seldom do). I got the sensor over the right bird's black chest and held down the exposure lock button, repositioned the sensor over the eye (head?) and pressed the shutter release 1/2 way down, recomposed the picture and fired. I am pleased that the body of the bird is dark gray with some detail. The histogram shows that the black body is displayed as mid tone.

Bob, This is the best of all the images to date. You did everything right except I'd perfer the image to be not centered.
